Racket drop and racket lag are not the same thing

Racket drop and racket lag happen in different parts of a tennis swing. Learn what each term means and how to use a clearer cue.

Racket drop

The racket drop is the moment the racket head falls below the hand as the swing moves from preparation toward the forward swing. It is part of a continuous loop, not a position to force with the wrist.

Racket lag

Lag describes the racket head trailing behind the hand as the handle moves toward contact. The hand leads forward while the racket head catches up and releases through the ball.

Use the right cue

These ideas are related, but one does not replace the other. A simple cue for the forward move is: “Point your butt cap to the ball.” It reminds you to let the handle lead without trying to hold a rigid wrist shape.

Look at the whole sequence. Preparation, drop, forward move, contact, and follow-through should connect. If the clip is clear enough, feedback should explain which part needs attention and why.
